What To Do With Your Garlic
by Team Ero
Garlic is a great crop that gives back on so many levels. First and foremost, the rich cloves for cooking are second to none. With a little heat, a little spice, and a little garlic it does not get much better. However, did you know there are several other uses for garlic? Below we will outline the other options for use to extend the garlic experience.
The Scape
The scape is the flower structure of the garlic plant. In hard neck varieties this must be removed to promote large bulb growth. The scape will look like a large curly-q green bean. Once cut, this is where the fun comes in. The scape has all the same flavor profiles as the garlic, however more concentrated. We like to dice them up and use in stir fry’s, over fresh greens, or even pickled which are a great garnish for bloody Mary’s.
Garlic Powder
When deciding which cloves to plant, it is best to use the largest as they will produce the largest heads the following spring. But now you may be asking what to do with the small ones before they start to dry out. Great question! This is the gift that keeps giving as it is a great way to enjoy the wonderful flavors of garlic on a true long shelf life.
Garlic Salt
Garlic salt is yet another fantastic way to preserve your crop. This can be made from the garlic bulb itself. Simply dehydrate your garlic and grind.
