How To Scape Your Hard Neck Garlic

The scape is the flower structure of the garlic plant.  On hard neck varieties it is important to remove the scape.  This will help direct energy into the bulb which in turn will produce a superior product.  The scape will appear in the middle of the plant and resemble a green bean.  This occurs in mid-May in zone 6.  To remove the scape, wait until one curl has grown then cut at the base of scape where it meets the plant.  For ideas on scape use, please refer to other articles.
